Empirical Cycling Podcast · Watts Doc #19: The VO2max Slow Component Explained
The slow component of vo2max is often mentioned but seldom discussed. We take a deep dive into the nature of the slow component, including thermodynamics, fiber type, and the size principle.

Where can I read more about the athletes discussed ~ @ minutes 39-40 of this podcast? You mentioned oxygen uptake numbers early & late in a 60 minute MLSS effort for what sounded like some pretty well trained athletes.

Love this podcast. Always food for thought. How would you see the slow component of VO2 being affected by intermittant e.g. 30:15 vs sustained ie 4 minute intervals? It seems based on a non scientific N=1 dataset that the VO2 rise is slower in the intermittent state at 125% FTP

VO2 slow component is hard to measure for intermittent work but certainly does show up sometimes, particularly if the sets are long enough or if the work&rest periods are at a consistent wattage. Check power:HR metric, could be a good clue.

One of my best choices of pod casts when training or travelling.
